Sugarloaf Weekend

We were in Sugarloaf this weekend for spring skiing and the weather was A-W-E-S-O-M-E. People were skiing/snowboarding in t-shirts and shorts - yes, it was about 40 degrees at the top of the mountain and 60 degrees plus at the base. I have never been so HOT skiing but I have also not skied in such tough conditions. The slushiness of the snow created moguls in the trails and required strong calf muscles from the constant flexing. In any case, I had a total blast to be around family and got to visit some cool places in Maine (Bush's Compound in Kennebunkport, Maine Diner, Duck Fat, and Two Fat Cats Bakery).

At the Maine Diner, we had a lobster roll w/o mayo and drawn butter on the side. Honestly, nothing impressive but we definitely liked the huge chunks of succulent lobster in the roll. We also had Indian Pudding for the first time and really enjoyed it. However, we both felt that it was overly sweet and could have been just as great with half the sugar. The service was nice, friendly, and super fast.

I really just wanted duck fat french fries and it was exactly what I ordered at Duck Fat. The fries were great and flavorful, and we thought the garlic aioli was just excellent. However, the rest of our meals was not impressive. I ordered a duck confit salad, which sounded pretty amazing, but when I was able to see the chef grab some shredded duck meat from a plastic container and heat it in the microwave... everything went downhill from there. The salad itself was mainly napa cabbage with some slices of apple on the side. And there I was really hoping to really taste some crispy skin on that duck confit. Boo hoo.

And from Two Fat Cats Bakery, we shared a chocolate cupcake with cream cheese frosting and chocolate macadamia nut cookie. Both were delicious. We also noticed the sign, "Best Cookie in Portland", and we agree. It's the only bakery we've been to in Portland and so far so good.

It was a 4.5 hour drive from Boston to Carrabasett Valley and we were hungry again by the time we got to our condo. Fortunately, we had also stopped by Micucci Foods to grab a few almost ready to eat items (spring salad mix, herbes de provence crusted dry salami, and portobello mushrooms ravioli). At the condo, I prepared a small bowl w/ some salad and topped it with some raviolis, salami, and marinara sauce. The meal was healthy and hearty and definitely hit the spot. I did not mind loading up on carbs knowing that we were going to have a full day of skiing on Saturday.

The view from the lift was very beautiful.

And there goes our last ski of the season!
